Hello,

I want to use YAF in commercial portal.I'm going to use forum also for any comments. So YAF would be integrated with my website.

1. Can I? Doesn't it break GPL licence?

2. Does my portal has to be published with GPL licence?

The GPL is the first and foremost copyleft license, which means that it requires derived works to be available under the same license terms.

GPL v2 section 7 says that if somebody has restrictions imposed that prevent him or her from distributing GPL-covered software in a way that respects other users' freedom (for example, if a legal ruling states that he or she can only distribute the software in binary form), he or she cannot distribute it at all.

So you can't redistribute your portal under commercial licence with YAF included.

Or you should discuss other commercial terms with the project leader and copyright owner.

Contact Jaben Cargman, YAF leader for details.

GPL v2 terms are about redistribution only. You can use it with any portal for personal needs 🙂

I would like to create portal and in future earn from advertisements and so-called premium accounts(premium accounts have more options but are NOT free).

So I wont redistribute application. It will be commercial because of advertisements, premium accounts etc.

So is it legal?

Depends. Without distribution, its not something that we can complain about. If we start offering a commercial compatible license, be sure to pick one up. 🙂

Hmm I don't understand. So If I don't sell(distribute) my portal engine I can use YAF even if I earn money from advertisements etc?And code of portal doesn't has to be published?

You are right. YAF is installed on a large number of corporate and commercial sites.

To put it all simply, commercial soft developers should not get profits from YAF free open source code in any form. And the licence is solely about it.
