I installed YAF in DNN and the first thing I get is a prompt for a config password. I read the installation documentation and there's nothing about what to enter in there. This is a big omission. I had to search the forums for this and found out it's 'pass'. What's the point of this password anyway?

The point is to protect the public from committing an upgrade. The password, which you can edit via app.config (possibly different for DNN) to whichever password you'd like.
