Running on my development machine, I have no problems. But on a productions server, when logging in, I get the following error

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

What am I doing wrong?

Could it be that "Network Service" or "IUSR" does not have file permissions to your site forum directory structure?

Or does the production web server require something else than Forms Authentication?

If I use a hard url into the forums folder, I don't get an error.

For example, if I use a response.redirect("mywebsite.com/forum/form.aspx") I don't get an error. It is when I use the built-in navigation and it goes to a url such as "mywebsite.com/forum/. Any hardcoded URL works.
