While we are at it regarding banning IP addresses...

I can exclude one IP address like eg 94.228.34.226 or an IP segment 94.228.34.*.

Does it work to exclude IP's with entries like 94.228.34.2* ?

Just wondering since 4D-DC just unleashed the magpie bot on my site with 700 "users" from the single IP mentioned above before I managed to stop it. The number of forum searching threads was growing all the time, noticed it at around 400 and it kept growing consuming more and more resources from the server...

A bot traffic is a real pain in the ass. The only real solution would be to slow'em down in general. In future it can be dealt with. In the current code bots should not increase views counter. Of cause if they are identified as bots.

This one was just showing as a guest running "Linux" using "Mozilla 0.0" - ie an unidentified bot.

The server did however stand up and served forum pages even if CPU was sky high constantly...
