We have a lot of folks using forum who are really old. They cant figure out the new registration. I would be happy to set up an account if there was a simple "contact us" form page, maybe with optional captcha? for those who don't have accounts.

You can enable Guests post access and it has a captcha. In the upcoming 1.9.6 RC1 they'll have a possibility to enter their own name instead of generic Guest too.
