CAn you adjust the points system? How many points are awarded for what?

Yes the Points can be adjusted, when you Edit a User you can modify the amount of Points a User have-

The User currently gets 3 Points for Posting a Message. In the next Release of YAF that Points System will be converted in to a Reputation System, more explanation about that here:
