We activated the "Enable Display Name" option in Administration » Host Settings » Features, but still cannot see the "Display Name" filed values from the users' profiles on the forum. Is it a bug, or some additional settings are required?

Strange, but it started to work today. After a delay of about one day...

Why did it happen this way?

Could be how your hosting is configured -- with "web farms" on causing an issue cache recycling for the host settings. Might want to ask your hosting if your site is using "web farms".

We use the default hosting settings provided by our hosting provider (DiscountASP.NET), and we never configured the directory with the forum as a "web farm". Where can we check this setting? In web.config, in our IIS settings in the Control Panel, or somewhere else?

It's not something you will control if you are buying hosting from someone... That will be how their system is setup to serve your hosting...

Jaben - if it is a farm, is that an issue? A client of mine recently deployed their site to a new ISP who distributes their load across a farm. Are there known issues with deploying YAF to a webfarm? If so, are there ways of mitigating this? e.g., disabling the cache, enabling shared session states.

Yes, you can add keys to web.config/ In this case in
decryptionKey="A321CC8181E0EDE6D194FA040398269C89C5BE3F444158F415858C61E442E980" validation="SHA1" decryption="AES" />
You should generate other key for you site!
