I'd like to give members of our message board the possibility to subscribe to a thread and receive updates via e-mail.
According to this topic  it's possible to subscribe to a thread. But on our message board I can't find the option to do this.

So how do I enable this?

This feature is enabled in YAF by default. Actually we have been discussing about how to turn it off in the post you have mentioned.
Users in your forum have 2 options to receive email notifications for topics:

1- If users want to be notified about new posts in each topic that they have posted a message, they should go to: My Profile->Edit Profile and check the Watch every topic in which .... checkbox in the forum settings folder. (See attachment no.1)

2- Uesrs always can use Watch this topic link available in options menu which can be found in evey topic page's top right corner. (see attachment no. 2)
