I know there is a new release of the discussion board out, but are there details on what the new features on in comparison to the old discussion board?

You mean the YAF 1.9.6.2 BETA is released?

Current Release is v1.9.6.1 RTW (SRC/BIN)

Each release includes a detailed "What's New" or "Changelog" -- I believe there is a link to the online version in the YAF Announcements forum. You can also view changes via the YAF BugTracker --
