I am considering building a control for having a media gallery. This would be on a member basis and there would be a separate link at the top with all of the other links. It would allow users to upload images and videos. Limit size could also be implemented through the administration panel. Would anyone be interested in this? If I get enough responses then I will start developing it this week. Please reply if you are interested in this control along with any capabilities you would like it to have.

And by the way ,it is good idea to not to put uploaded pics in db but in a folder just to reduce db size.or maybe data can be stored in xml files to not alter the db for easier installation.
And also let me know if i can help.

Agreed, DB space is expensive, disk is cheap. Please continue with this (and make sure its GPL as I code incorporate it into my portal then).

"It's a case of RTFM.. the only problem being we don't have a manual!"

When I post FP:Mek in a topic, I'm leaving my footprint there so I can track it once I get into coding/supporting. (Yes I stole this off Ederon 🙂 )

I will definitely release it with a GPL. I had no intention of storing the images in the database, however, I would like to store the path and user id for the media in the database.

Mek,

I will also add a GPL to my ShoutBox if there is any interested in including that in a future release.

yes yes yes yes yes!! 100% yes!
in fact, link it to thier user CP so when I look a member's info (as a regular member), I can see thier gallery.. and let the board admins name that gallery.
In the case of my board at www.silveradoss.net , i want to name it the Showroom.

Please see my post in my ShoutBox thread regarding compiling the code into a DLL, using a different project and just adding it to the solution. This would ease implementation and allow me to keep all of the DLESKTECH controls together.

YEs please! like SMF has Aeva Media, which is pretty cool...I run a internet hip hop radio station and promotion site, and would love to implement a media gallery for mp3's etc for my members! Has this happened yet??

A great idea; the thing about the Album feature is nobody will know you have an Album unless they view your profile. A separate browsable gallery would be great.

One thing we'd like (and it's the reason we use a third party editor called CuteEditor) is on-the-fly- resizing of jpg's.

Originally, we'd set an upload size of about 200k, which would require members to re-size their upload pics. Members where trying to upload directly from their digital cameras (when we had a larger allowed file-size they COULD do it, but the uploads were thousands of pixels wide and requireds horizontal scrolling (yuck).

I purchase CuteEditor, and it will take a 5 M upload, re-size it (to say, 800 pixels wide) and everything was fine...members didn't have to re-size and viewers didn't have to scroll.

Then, the 'lightbox' version of YAF came; we STILL use CuteEdtor though, because although lightbox thumbnails prevent the post from being wide, the 5 meg uploads from digicams still take up space needlessly (when a 300K 800 pixel shot is fine).

So, re-sizing would be a plus!
Enjoy!
