Hi,

I am in the process of creating a Microsoft Word based user guide for YAF to provide to my customer.

To help me produce my own user material, is there any material already in existence? I could not find any and have read before (in old posts) that nothing 'decent' exists.

Providing I change the images to match a generic forum (and not related to my customer) it should be okay for me to circulate the final version so that YAF may have SOMETHING to provide to future users (who may not be able to figure out the forum functionality themselves). Would this be appreciated by other users/YAF Devs?

I should have the version for my customer "finished" by the end of the week.

Regards,

Adam

This would be massively appreciated by the DEV's... documentation is a major problem for us and user contribution would help us out immensely.

"It's a case of RTFM.. the only problem being we don't have a manual!"

When I post FP:Mek in a topic, I'm leaving my footprint there so I can track it once I get into coding/supporting. (Yes I stole this off Ederon 🙂 )

Cool.

After I've done it for my customer I will tailor it to be as generic as possible and post an update. I've saved this in my favourites and subscribed to the thread so if I forget someone can nudge me :p

*edit* I'm stuck with studies at the moment. I'll try to find time to edit what I did - this is still in my favourites.

So, I finally got around to sorting it out. It's been on my to-do list for quite some time.

Mek can I mail it to you? PM me your address? You can then check it over and host it if you think it'll be useful for you guys.

Any chance I could get a copy of this document? I've been doing 'light administration' on our forum for the past 2 years—creating new categories, forums, user groups, simple stuff like that. Now, we're suddenly being swamped with fake registrations. I was told that if I upgrade to the 1.9.4 version I'll be able to block them. Is that true? If so, how do I do it? I have to admit that on this I'm completely clueless. :?

On the other hand, I AM a technical writer, so I could do some editing for you if this document really exists. Any knowledgeable guidance would be appreciated!

I've downloaded the latest versions, unzipped, have logged in to YAF as admin, checked the version, and try the install link...which assures me that the latest version has been successfully uploaded. And yet, the version continues to be 1.9.1.2. Suggestions? Instructions? Rap on the knuckles for ignorance?

Thanks.

I've downloaded the latest versions

What do you mean by this?

1.9.4 RC1 has Captcha only. It gives some protection against some moron bots.

1.9.4 RC2(unreleased) has ReCaptcha too, which makes it much more secure.

If you want to be a rather protected site, you should wait until 1.9.4 RC2.

*Are you young enough? 🙂 *

Nothing can give you a 100% protection against bots.

I downloaded this file: YAF-v1.9.4-RC1-SRC.zip

I then unzipped it.

Check my current version in YAF > Admin > Upgrade > Version Check.

Ask it to install politely in YAF > Admin > Upgrade > Install.

Check my current version in YAF > Admin > Upgrade > Version Check which tells me:

You are running Yet Another Forum.net version 1.9.1.2.

The latest available version is 1.9.3 released 4/22/2009.

You can download the latest version from here.

It lies, of course. Because when I click the link, it downloads YAF-v1.9.4-RC1-SRC.zip, which is newer than 1.9.3...unless you guys use a very interesting numbering system. ^.- So, I figure I must be missing something that is so obvious to you guys that it hasn't been written down. Because although I'm a whiz with the software we write here, I don't do the code stuff-I just don't have any background in this end of things.

Does that help make sense of my dilemma?

Does 1.9.3 have Captcha so I can eliminate (or at least reduce) the daily hoarde of fake registrations? Do you have a recommnedation on where I can find/download detailed instructions on the upgrade process?
