when a new thread is created you can choose to get email notification when a response happens. cool, as it should be.:-d

But if i am a responder, I don't have this option. not so cool.

Standard procedure for forums is a choice per thread for email notification of new posts and/or a profile choice to Always be subscribed to thread i post in.

this is pretty fundamental for getting folks to return to conversations and unless i'm just having a brain-stapling moment and can't find how to turn this one, it is a change you guys ought to think about adding. puleeeze?

bonus points for a manage my subscriptions area in my profile so i can unsubscribe from boring threads while retaining subscriptions to others.

ooop, went and looked at the bug tracker and see that this was suggested in 2005! I guess it's not a high priority.

Well hit me with a stupid stick. There it is in the upper right hand "options" drop down menu.

sorry for being a dipstick. Admins, feel free to nuke this thread. It won't hurt my feelings at all.

Yup...it's that reading thing! Gets me all the time! :P

Not to worry, as the wise man once said, "...there is no such thing as a stupid question, just a stupid answer..."

True, true. that's one of my mantras, too.

though I still think there should be an admin setup choice to make subscriptions on by default for every post you make. that's one big factor in getting people to return day after day -- seeing that their latest post(s) have replies.

But on the down side, gettings loads of e-mails about replies isn't agood thing wither. Unless the user has specifically asked for them. Double edged sword I'm afraid.

absolutly. that's why the double edged sword needs two blades.

1. set subscriptions on by default. Most users unless they're spammers do not have too many threads going and won't be getting too many emails. = return traffice = good

2. allow user to turn this off in his/her profile in case they ARE a power user or mod and have dozens of posts in dozens of threads.

3. add check box to reply box for adding subscriptions when the user wants to selective add a notification. that way they can keep it turned off by default, and subscribe as a responder selectively.

I am new to YetAnotherForum and am looking at it to take the place of a traditional Email list server. But also have a page people can check if they do not what the emails. So the Email features are important to me. It seams that if a user chooses to watch a tread it adds it to their subscriptions. Will they get an email any time there is a new post? If they choose not to get an email they just unsubscribe to the thread? If this is not how it work please advise.

Thanks

Yupp, almost.

Example:

I don't subscribe this thread -> I will not be notified on new replies in here (imho bad because no1 looks whats happened)

If I subscribe and for example be away in holidays for a week, I get only 1 email notifying me about there are new replys in this thread (even there are 20 new posts meanwhile) until I access and read it (if logged in of course). Then I have read the new replies and will be notified on new ones again.

You can subscribe/unsubscribe using the options menu of each post (or subscribe with the checkbox if you start a topic).

This is the best method I think, and afaik the only one in yaf (together with no notifications of cource)
