Not that I want the team here to get any ideas, but I got a quote from Telligent for CS Professional that I can't believe.

5000 Euros per year. USD$6700.

Makes YAF look even better.

For what do you get this quote? And why yaf should looks better???

It is very good as it is.

I strongly disagree. I don't use such commercial only software and I can't understand developers that go that way. I even don't know one single reason why to use products from them...

The only reason to do something like this is to cut of private users and maybe some dumb questions. This is really stupid, because you will cut of most of the best developers. That ones that develops webs or software for free, cause it's their hobby. Also you reduce the community a lot, because I think only 5% of the members in here can and want to buy this for that amount of euros / $...

If you want to pay 5000€ for YAF please feel free to donate to the developers, I'm pretty sure they would be very happy about this.

Hi Tommy

I didn't make my point clear or didn't it translate well.

I think YAF is fine.

My point was that the quote from Telligent really suprised me, seems way over priced and makes CS very undesirable.

I can't imagine any small web site owner using CS if they have to pay 5000 Euros per year to do so.

I've got no intention of paying them.

And I should also add that the 5000 Euros per year is the starting price!

Ah, ok 🙂 (my english isn't the best, maybe I have missunderstand it, too)

Yes, but if they want that pricing...

Well, i can understand that some developers don't want to work for free for large commercial. But I think the way Umbraco goes is much better. Their CMS is open source and free, but you can buy full support and some extra features. I think this is ok, but not t.'s way :)

Also I have tested the CS about a year ago. I don't want to use it, even it would be for free.

Umbraco and YAF in a team is unbeatable 😉

I tried CS about two years ago, but was not able to install it due to medium trust issues

I'm not sure why I even bothered to look again, but I won't be going any further.

And thanks for the Umbraco reference. I had not heard of them before, but will now investigate.

Yup Umbraco is definately a good CMS that is way under the radar, unfortunately it didn't operate the way I wanted otherwise I'd have gone that route for a sure instead of trying to develop my own. The thing with CS is it is free as long as you'll leave all their blurb in place and can run with their cut down version.

But its an apple and pears comparison with YAF and CS, since YAF is just an OS Forum whilst CS is closed and is more than just forums.

When I post FP:Mek in a topic, I'm leaving my footprint there so I can track it once I get into coding/supporting. (Yes I stole this off Ederon 🙂 )

I'm not so sure about the free usage thing. That's the way it was, but the Express Edition details say:

If you want a social networking community for non-commercial use, our Express Edition is for you.

Note the non-commercial bit. The only question Telligent asked me if I was going to make money from my site. I replied 'Yes, eventually', and got the 5000 Euro quote.
