Is it possible to 'hide' a forum from users and the main page without actually deleting it?

I'd like to trial removing some lesser used forums but would like the ability to reinstate if needed without losing all the information.

Yes you can hide a forum, via the Access Mask. First you go in to the Forum Settings of the Forum you want to hide, and enable the checkbox Hide if no access next you set the Access Masks for all Groups to No Access. And the forum will be hidden.
