If I add a linked role to a user in DNN, that role is not assigned to the user in YAF. I have to go to YAF and assign the role there as well. Is this how it's supposed to work or a bug?

Which version of YAF are you using? There Was a bug in the Module in the Version 2.22.0-5730, which is fixed in version 2.22.0-5731

Normally you only need to set the roles in DNN, they are synced with YAF as soon the user visits the forum, or you press the Sync Users button. Or you have the YAF User & Roles Import Scheduler enabled, then the roles are updated as soon as the scheduler runs.

Where is the Sync button?

And how do I check the version? When I go to version check it only says 2.2.2.

On the Page the "Import Now" Button synchronizes all users including the profiles.

Go to the Extensions page under Host > Extensions. On that page you see the exact YAF Module Version
