I've got several people helping me test my forums before I go live with them and have just run across a problem with Approved members needing to have their posts approved. I checked in the Forum settings and the "Pre-Moderation" box is NOT checked, so the users should be able to post with out needing their posts approved. Is there something else I need to do to set it so that Approved members do not have to have their posts approved before they appear for all approved members to see? I ran a search on this topic but didn't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the double post - I noticed last night that I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum. Any help on why posts by Approved members have to be approved/moderated would be appreciated.

TIA

Just curious, but has no one ever run across this problem? Or are all posts supposed to HAVE to be moderated? I could really use some help on this. I've tried checking boxes, un-checking boxes, I've checked the "Approved" user privileges, and they all seem to be set correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to modify your actual 'per forum' configuration, and you need to check your user roles. One or the other is requiring moderation on posts.

Squirrel, could you please (please?) point me in the right direction of where to look for these settings? I'm looking at the Admin setup under Forums.

I've looked in the Administration » Forums » Add/Edit Forum

Pre-moderated:

If the forum is moderated, posts have to be approved by a moderator. This is NOT checked.

Under Edit Forum >> Group: Access Mask

Approved members >>> have Member Access

Under Administration » Access Masks

Name: Name of this access mask. >> Member Access

Order: Sort order for this access mask. >> 2

Read Access: Checked

Post Access: Checked

Reply Access: Checked

Priority Access: Not Checked (does this need to be checked? It doesn't say anything about Moderation needed for this)

Poll Access: Not Checked

Vote Access: Not Checked

Moderator Access: Not Checked

Edit Access: Checked

Delete Access: Checked

Upload Access: Checked

Download Access: Checked

On the above, I'm presuming that the Moderator Access means that members would be Mods if this was checked - not that their posts need to be moderated.

Where else do I have to set user roles or form rights? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA,

Are you configured "Spam Settings" - Is "Automatic SPAM detection" checked? (In HOST settings)

Try uncheck if so, see if that resolves the issue.

If it's enabled, there might be additional configuration needed for it to work right. tha_watcha know SPAM configuration better than I do --

Thanks Squirrel!

OK, I've gone to the Host settings, and the only place I could see anything related to Spam filtering is under the Administration » Host Settings >> Spam Settings: Choose a SPAM Service for Automatically SPAM Checking: Disabled.

I had set this to use BlogSpam.net, but I have now disabled it.

Is there anywhere else I have to set the settings for Moderation? Honestly, this just makes no sense to me at all that an Approved Member would have to have their posts Moderated/approved.

Thanks for your assistance, I will let you know if this works.

The moderation is tied to the Automatic Spam checking. You said it was enabled. With it now disabled, moderation will not be required unless you have a forum set to moderated as you set in Add/Edit forum --> Pre-Moderated.

If SPAM checking enabled and not properly configured, messages all show up unapproved.

As for the concept of approved members being moderated - an approved member is simply someone who has created an account on the forums and verified with an email (if required). That's it. So if YAF allowed 'approved' members through the spam filter without checking, then any user who validated an account could spam away since they are 'approved'.

When you enable SPAM checking, it is a form of moderation - only in the sense that a 'machine' is moderating the message and not a human. If the machine 'tags' the message it will be either deleted or left for a human moderator. Otherwise, when the response comes back from the spam service (which is a third-party service) and it is clean, YAF will set message to approved automatically.

Now there is potential for a couple things in development - but I am not in the developer team here - just a support helper. Anyways - SPAM filter could have an option to allow members with 'x' rank or role assigned to them bypass spam check - or even an option in access masks. I'm not sure how that could pan out...

@devs: For 'UI/UX' purposes, it would be useful that if Spam service is enabled, the moderation message shall include a notation that message is being verified by SPAM service - rather than just saying "Message is awaiting moderator approval" or the likes. That would remove confusion both for new 'admins' of YAF as well as users.
